Choosing the Best Jewellery Clasp

There is much more to jewellery clasps than them just being functional components used to connect two ends of necklaces, bracelets or anklets. Some clasps are used for function online and feature a passive yet classic appearance to avoid overpowering the main jewellery piece. However, other clasps feature bold and exciting designs, making them an important part of the overall piece.

Spring Ring Clasps

Spring ring clasps are common amongst costume jewellery pieces. They open by pushing back on a small lever, which slides along a circular ring. Once the clasp has opened, a chain or loop is inserted, the lever is released, and the chain returns to its closed position.

You’re likely to find these clasps on necklaces, bracelets and anklets, but they can be difficult to handle on smaller pieces.

Lobster Claw Clasps

These clasps look like tiny lobster claws, though the style of them does vary to suit each jewellery piece or to ensure they are secure. Lobster claw clasps feature tiny springs in their mechanism, similar to spring ring clasps, that keep the arms closed until you push on the lever.

Lobster claw clasps are often used for securing bracelets, necklaces, anklets and charms. They are easy to use and do not often require help.

Box Clasps

A lesser known jewellery clasp, box clasps feature two-pieces that open when you push down on the exterior lever. It works by compressing the clasp so that it slides out of the opening. To close the clasp, it simply needs to be pushed back in, where it will click back into place.

Box clasps are easy to use and can be a decorative addition to many jewellery pieces like necklaces and bracelets.

Toggle Clasps

Toggle clasps feature two parts that are attached to opposite ends of jewellery, often necklaces or bracelets. One part of the clasp is a circle, or other shape with an open middle. The other part is a thick bar that attaches to the circle at the other end. Toggle clasps work by inserting the thick bar into the circle, where it extends past the edges and holds the jewellery in place.

These clasps often feature in an array of sizes designs, though they aren’t as secure as other clasps.

Other Clasps

There are many other clasps types and designs available, including magnetic, decorative and hidden clasps.

Trying on necklaces and bracelets to see how easily you can open and close them and how secure they feel is the only way to test out which clasp would work best for you. Most jewellery pieces come with clasps readily attached, but they can be changed if need be.
