What to Know about Uncut Diamonds

Buying uncut diamonds can help you to save a lot of money. Also known as raw and rough diamonds, uncut diamonds are unpolished and unshaped. They can be grown in a lab, but are more likely to be naturally mined and can vary in size and are usually a less expensive option when compared to cut diamonds.

A diamonds value is based on the four C’s; cut, carat, colour and clarity. The cut is the most important factor when determining value, and refers to its proportion, symmetry and polish. This affects how light bounces off the diamond and makes it appear more sparkly. It takes a lot of skill and technology to achieve an ideal diamond cut, which is why they can be quite expensive.

A diamonds natural quality has a huge impact on its value, which includes its size, colour and clarity. Rough diamonds won’t have any sparkle, but their quality will determine the cost of the finished cut diamond.

Carat- Often the higher the carat weight, the more expensive the diamond will be, assuming all qualities are the same. A smaller rough diamond that appears clearer could cost more than a larger rough diamond with multiple flaws.

Clarity- Most diamonds will contain flaws. The fewer they have, the higher grade of clarity it will be. A raw diamond that is flawless could be worth a lot more money than a cut diamond with a low clarity.

Colour- Most diamonds have a natural colour tinge of yellow or brown. The more colourless a diamond is, the more rare and expensive it will be.

Shape- The shape of the rough diamond can have a huge impact on its value. Sometimes, large rough diamonds can be odd shapes, meaning a lot will have to be removed to make a smaller, polished diamond.

Ultimately, there are many factors that determine the value of both uncut and cut diamonds. If looking for an engagement ring, family heirloom or otherwise timeless jewellery piece, it is best to opt for a cut diamond as they are more sought after and valuable. However, some people do prefer the look of rough diamonds, though this trend comes and goes whereas the classic beauty of a cut diamond will stay.
