5 Reasons to Buy a Vintage Watch

Vintage Watch.jpgAre you thinking of investing in a new watch? Perhaps it’s your first timepiece, or you are looking to expand your collection. Either way, if you have not considered buying vintage before, we have plenty of reasons why it is a good option. There is much debate about what defines a vintage watch, but for the purpose of this article, we will include pre-loved watches of around 30 years old, up to antiques of 100 years old or more.

They have a story

When it comes to buying a vintage watch perhaps at auction, the story of the watch is often worth more than the actual timepiece. For example, if a watch was previously owned by a public figure or celebrity, it will be inevitably worth more. However, a vintage watch need not have been owned by Einstein to emanate a sense of nostalgia and old charm. A watch that has been loved by a previous owner offers an air of mystery and depth that’s sometimes lacking in a brand new watch.

They are built to last

In an age where the latest gadget is obsolete within a year or two, a vintage watch makes a refreshing change. A quality vintage watch has been made using the finest materials is built to last so, providing it has been well cared for, the watch should serve you well for many years.

It’s the unique option

While it is easy to pop down to the shopping centre and pick a brand new Tag Heuer or Breitling, it might not be long before you find someone else with the same watch. However, if you take a little time to find a vintage watch, it is more likely to turn heads and start conversations because of its uniqueness.

They are often more affordable

As a general rule, pre-owned watches cost less than brand new watches. As a car depreciates in value as soon as you drive it out of the dealership, the selling price of a watch will decrease once it has been worn. Some very rare vintage watches may seem pricey; however, when the quality, history and individuality of the watch are taken into account, the price is usually justified. There are some exceptions to the rule however; Luxury watch brands such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier and others continue to hold their value well and prove to be a great investment.

They look good

This one is quite simple, but it’s important for a watch to look good if you are wearing it every day! With many brands bringing vintage inspired models into their ranges, it seems that classic styles stand the test of time and continue to be a sophisticated choice.
