Brooches are thought to be the oldest type of jewellery, traditionally used to hold items of clothing together and worn by both women and men. In more recent years they have been created purely for decorative purposes, but are very versatile pieces that can be worn in a variety of ways. With brooches back in fashion and with many antique styles available, why not treat yourself?
Here are 5 easy ways that a brooch can brighten up your outfit:
On a jacket or coat lapel
This is the classic way to wear a brooch, and works well with a large and ornate piece, or a cluster of smaller brooches. If you’re getting a bit bored of wearing the same coat in the winter, accessorising with a brooch is a great way to add some variety.
To hold a scarf in place
Here is a way that an antique brooch can be functional as well as decorative. By using it to pin a scarf in place, you are preventing the scarf from blowing away in blustery weather while also adding some interest to your look. This would work particularly well for a formal occasion that requires a few extra layers, such as a winter wedding or Christmas party.
On a blouse
A brooch pinned to a blouse will soften up a sharp suit, without being over-bearing or inappropriate for an office environment. Either pin it at the top where the buttons meet the collar, or off to the side. If it's a loose fitting blouse in a flimsy fabric, do not choose a brooch too heavy or it will pull on the fabric and tear a hole; instead, you could wear two or three small pins clustered together.
As a hairpiece
Whether it's attached to a hat, a hair-band, or pinned straight into your hair (this would only work with a sturdy up-do), an antique brooch used as a hair piece will add some 1920s glamour to your look. Have it remade
Have you acquired an antique brooch from a relative, or did you buy one that you never have any intention of wearing? Although there are many ways to wear an antique brooch, if you feel that you could make better use of it as a pendant, a bracelet or a ring, why not have it re-created? A good jewellery designer will be able to advise you on how best to use the stones and the metal, whether you want to keep the brooch's antique charm or go for something more contemporary. With the help of our expert goldsmiths and ring designers, we at Cuttings would be more than happy to discuss your requirements with you.
