6 Simple Ways to Save Money on Jewellery

Buying jewellery can be expensive, whether it’s for you or a gift for your loved ones. While it is a sizeable investment, there are many ways you can save money when buying jewellery, without compromising on quality.

If you want to pay less for jewellery, consider the following before you buy…

1. Avoid Big Brands

Large jewellery chains on the high street can have a big mark-up on their stock. Generally this is because people know their name, and they pay a lot of money for it. Designer brands in particular can get away with charging very high prices for jewellery, even though it is the same quality you would find anywhere else. If you visit an independent jeweller, you’ll find that prices can be as much as 50% less than a brand name.

2. Shop Vintage or Antique

Pre-owned jewellery is often much cheaper than buying new, and you’ll get a lot more value for money this way. Here at Cuttings, we carry a wide range of beautiful antique jewellery, at a price much lower than London antique centres. An antique piece also offers a unique, pre-loved quality that is missing with brand new jewellery.

3. Consider coloured gemstones instead of diamonds

If you’re looking for an engagement ring, have you thought about opting for coloured gems, such as a ruby, sapphire or emerald for the centre stone? Although modern tradition dictates that engagement rings should be a diamond ring, many people prefer coloured stones. These can be just as attractive as a diamond, and of course they cost less.

4. Focus on design

It’s not all about the size of the stones on jewellery – intricate details, such as engravings and unique settings, can make an affordable piece of jewellery look ornate and expensive. If you choose a piece of jewellery where the craftsmanship is the most prominent feature and not the big centre stone, you are more likely to pay less.

5. Swap a large stone for lots of small ones

One easy way to achieve a dazzling effect with a diamond ring (without breaking the bank) is to opt for a few small stones, rather than buying one big diamond. When arranged into a halo design (1 central diamond bordered with a ring of diamonds around), it will still look like a big, sparkling ring, but at a much cheaper price.

6. Buy from a diamond expert

If you are looking for quality diamonds in your jewellery and at great value, then why not visit a diamond expert who can source the diamonds direct for you? Cuttings Jewellers purchase diamonds from the Antwerp or London Diamond Bourse, before having them mounted by craftsmen. This results in a ring that will cost you up to 60% less than high street prices.
