Antique JewelleryThe benefit of buying antique jewellery is that you are getting a high quality piece of jewellery that is completely unique. It has a story to tell, and creates quite a fuss among friends whenever it's worn.

The team at Cuttings Jewellers has a wealth of experience with antiques - we always have a distinct range of rings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches and watches on display in either our Margate and Ramsgate shops.

Whatever you're looking for, here are some tips to remember when shopping for antique jewellery.

Tip 1:
Research. Even if you are speaking to an antiques expert, it's a good idea to have some prior
knowledge before looking for an antique, as it will help you to decide what you are looking for. Have a look online at pictures of jewellery from different design eras, to get an idea of what styles you like. Are you looking for diamonds? Coloured gemstones? Gold or Platinum? Dainty or dazzling? Narrowing the options down beforehand will help you to keep a level head when faced with the trove of antique treasures at the jewellers!

Tip 2: Choose an expert. If you’re new to buying antique jewellery, we first advise a visit to a jewellers which specialise in antique jewellery. If you are considering buying online, be aware as it is difficult to determine the jewellery's quality from a website, and to know if you’re buying from a trusted seller. Instead, find an independent jeweller you can talk to, and see the goods first hand. There are several reasons for this; firstly, an independent jeweller's prices are going to be considerably less than a high street chain. The expert will also help you find exactly what you are looking for. They’ll be able to give you lots of advice on how to care for your jewellery, too.

Tip 3: Consider the price. Even if it’s just a rough price range, you will probably have a budget in mind for your jewellery. Before rushing in to buy an antique, have a look around to see how much you can get for your money. When it comes to antiques, if a price seems too good to be true, it probably is. The next tip will help you to find out whether an antique is worth the price…

Tip 4: Ask Questions. If the person you’re buying from doesn't tell you much about the jewellery, make sure to ask lots of questions so that you know exactly what you're buying. The answers to the following questions will help you to decide whether the jewellery is worth the price:
  • What carat is the gold?
  • What size are the stones? (Carat weight)
  • What’s the quality of the stones like? (colour and clarity)
  • Has the jewellery been restored in any way?
  • Are there any defects I should know about?
