fine jewellery blog thumbnail.pngEveryone wants their jewellery to last as long as possible and to be suitable for everyday wear. Sometimes, people also want their jewellery to last so long that it can be passed down through the generations.

Stones for jewellery come in a variety of qualities, but there are some stones that are more durable than others.

Within gemology, jewels are rated for durability based on the Mohs scale. This is a scale of one to ten - one being a soft stone and ten being a relatively hard and durable stone.

This scale measures durability in terms of scratch resistance and it is believed that any gemstone rated an eight or above is durable enough to be used in rings which are worn often.

One of the most durable stones is a diamond. On the Mohs scale, diamonds are given a rating of ten which means that they are an extremely hard stone. As a result of this, they are perfect to be used in various types of jewellery, especially rings, because of their high durability.

Sapphire & Ruby

Most famous for their bright blue and red appearances, sapphires and rubies are also highly durable stones.

They both rank a nine on the Mohs scale. This means that, like diamonds, they are good stones to use for jewellery that will be worn often, such as engagement rings.

As well as having significance in jewellery, sapphires also have royal symbolism because of their deep blue colour. They are also the birthstone for the month of September.

Rubies are also significance in terms of symbolism of love; it is particularly common to give this stone as part of jewellery around Valentine’s Day. This stone is also the birthstone for the month of July.

Topaz is ranked an eight on the Mohs scale in terms of durability. This stone is often desired not just because of its durability but due to the range of colours that it comes in.

Here at Cuttings we have a range of rings in stock with various durable stones. Take a look at what we have in store right here.
