How are Diamond Engagement Rings Made?

Diamond engagement rings are beautiful works of art. Beyond the dazzling diamonds and shiny bands is a lifetime of hard work and skill.

diamond-ring.jpgCreating any ring from scratch takes someone with a lot of dedication and patience. Purchasing a ring starts with choosing the band, stone and setting, from which the jeweller will then create the ring based on the chosen features.

The Band

The first step of creating any ring is to form the band from a piece of metal, whether the customer choose silver, gold, platinum or otherwise. The jeweller will use a bending machine in order to curve the metal bar into a circular, ring shape, based on the customers ring size.

The band needs to be closed to form a proper ring, and this is done by soldering. A filler made of the same material as the band is used for soldering to create consistency and flawlessness. The jeweller will also add flux paste to the newly formed band to prevent it from oxidising.

The Setting

Depending on the type of setting chosen, this process can vary. Generally, a piece of the same metal used for the band is rolled into a loop and placed within an oval setting punch. Once punched, it is shaped into a conical shape, of which the diamond will sit within. This then has to be fitted into the newly created band.

A jeweller will use a specially designed saw in order to create a small wedge for the cup to sit in the band. It will be aligned, soldered together and smoothed out to ensure no rough edges remain.

The Stone

The diamond is the main attraction of an engagement ring, making setting the stone an important task. To do this, the jeweller places the ring in a thermoset plastic of which is held securely in a ball clamp. The jewellery then carves a small seat for the stone to sit within the cup, and the prongs are pressed down onto the diamond in order to grip it and keep it in place.

The Sparkle

To really give diamond engagement rings the wow factor, the ring is finally polished. Any thermoplastic material still in place on the ring is removed, and it is then placed into hot water and thoroughly washed. Any necessary touch ups are then completed, and the ring is polished to bring out its beautiful sparkle. White gold or silver rings are plated with rhodium to add extra sheen.
