How to pick the perfect Rolex watch for me

Rolex watches are not only recognisable around the world, but additionally synonymous with wealth, status and sophistication. Their timeless classic designs and durability is what makes them such a popular brand.

However, since its foundation in 1905, Rolex have produced numerous watches, each with their own distinct uses. It can become difficult to navigate through this mindfield when looking for the perfect watch to invest in for yourself.

Cuttings the Jewellers have put together our guide on finding the right Rolex watch for you.

For the businessman

The all-gold Rolex Day-Date watch with the matching ‘president’ bracelet is an eye-catching statement of ‘I’ve made it’.  While it is one of the more flashy Rolex watches, it is also the most classy in this price bracket.

The Day-Date Rolex watch is a classically good-looking watch; one that is timeless. It is the perfect watch to have poking out from under your shirt cuff in an important meeting. Rolex have designed the face to have the day written in full across the top of the face which, while striking, has been found to also be very practical by its users.

This watch embodies all that the Rolex brand has come to symbolise.

For everyday use

When One thinks of a Rolex, terms such as luxury and expensive come to mind. The thought of an everyday Rolex watch thus feels more like an oxymoron. However, here at Cuttings the Jewellers, we believe that there is a watch which fits this everyday bracket: the Datejust.

The Datejust watch was designed by Rolex to be highly customisable, which means that you can configure it to look exactly how you’d like. With a variety of sizes, colours and metals to choose from, this watch can be designed for more casual use or for special occasions.

Today, the Datejust Rolex watch is also water resistant up to 100 metres and has a power reserve of approximately 70 hours!

For the traveller

If you are someone who is travelling a lot, either for business or for pleasure, then the Rolex GMT Master II is the perfect watch for you. Launched in the mid-1950s and originally designed for pilots, this watch, as the name may suggest, is a GMT (Greenwich Meantime) watch.

The design of the watch therefore features an additional hand for telling the GMT time. Rotating around a 24-hour bezel, the wearer of the watch will always be able to tell the time in both their current location, and that of GMT, which is very useful when travelling a lot.

For the adventurer

The Rolex Explorer is the brand’s most understated steel sports watch. It has a rich history, beginning with Sir Edmund Hillary’s infamous ascent to Mount Everest in 1953. To commemorate the pioneering achievement, Rolex released the Oyster Perpetual Explorer.

Today Rolex offers two models of the Explorer watch. The first is the 39mm Explorer whose design remains true to the original and large numerals, a black dial and a durable Oyster case.

The Explorer II is an evolution of the earlier model. It is slightly larger than its predecessor and has the added function of GMT so the wearer can keep track of multiple time zones.

Both are fantastic watches that are designed and built for someone who is outdoors a lot or in extreme environments. Their durability and equally beautiful design is what makes them a first-rate Rolex watch.

For the sportsman

Rolex have a wide range of sports watches, each designed specifically for a particular sport. We have selected three of Rolex’s most famous and popular sports watches.

Divers

The Submariner Rolex watch looks similar to the GMT-Master but is actually a completely different timepiece. It is far tougher and capable of being submerged up to 300 metres under water.

As a watch designed for divers, the Submariner meets the ISO 6425 standard which means that, as well as being water resistant, it is also unfazed by salt water, magnetism and rapid changes to pressure and temperature.

Motorsports

If you have ever watched motorsports on the TV, you have likely seen an advert for the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. It has been around since 1963 and is widely considered to be the watch to have among the motorport community.

Given the sport it has been designed for, the Daytona features a second hand which displays an accurate reading to one-eighth of a second, as well as two dials to show the elapsed time in hours and minutes.

Sailor

When Rolex created the Yacht-Master II, they really put every bit of technology they could into it, while retaining the classically sleek Rolex appearance. Designed for experienced sailors, the watch features a programmable countdown timer with mechanical memory and on-the-fly synchronisation.

These features allow skippers to programme the watch to automatically start a countdown for a certain amount of time (between 1 and 10 minutes). This allows them to accurately follow the official starting procedure of a boat race. Additionally, where a watch’s bezel is not normally mechanically linked to its internal mechanism, the Rolex Yacht-Master II’s is, giving the wearer control over rotating the bezel to set the countdown timer.

In Summary

Rolex is one of the most established and recognisable luxury watch brands in the world. Over the years, they have evolved their designs and technology to produce some of the world’s most incredible watches.
