Interesting Features of the Rolex Deepsea D-Blue Dial

Deep-Sea_D-Blue.jpgLast year Rolex released a new Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller with D-Blue Dial, to commemorate James Cameron’s 2012 Deepsea Challenge. The watch is remarkable for many reasons, firstly because it was released outside of Rolex’s usual schedule coinciding with Baselworld. It’s also interesting because of the way it’s so personally linked to Cameron’s journey. Join us as we take a closer look at this special edition of the Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller.

Ringlock System

Just like the classic Deapsea, the D-Blue features Rolex’s unique, patented Ringlock system which allows the watch to survive at a depth of 3,900 metres. The system is based around three main elements, which include a nitron-alloyed steel central ring, a titanium back and a 5mm thick, domed sapphire crystal front.

Titanium Case Back

Interestingly, titanium is naturally flexible despite also being incredibly strong. This makes it the perfect material for the back of the Deepsea’s case, because it can withstand incredible pressure. In fact, the water pressure is useful to the waterproofness of the watch; it forces the components of the Ringlock System together as the depth increases.

Symbolic Dial Colour

As a nod to James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenger Submersible mission from 2012, the D-Blue’s dial features a blue to black gradient, to represent the ocean water plunging into deep darkness.

Green “DEEPSEA” Text

All the text on the D-Blue’s dial is white, apart from the word “Deepsea”, which is coloured green to represent Cameron’s green submersible descending into the deep.

Helium Escape Valve

How does the Rolex Deepsea stay fully waterproof, while also allowing for helium to escape from the case while divers are in the decompression chamber? With an expertly crafted gas escape valve, fitted with a spring to allow the release of helium, without affecting how waterproof the case is.

Glidelock Extension System

Specifically designed for divers, the patented Glidelock extension allows the wearer to make an adjustment to the bracelet without needing to use tools. This is important for divers, as it allows a comfortable and secure fit over a diving suit.

Blue Luminescence

The distinctive blue glow on Rolex’s D-Blue lasts twice as long as standard luminescent materials, and in addition the triangular zero marker is visible even in the depths of the ocean.

Large Case

As Rolex’ most high-performance diving watch to date, the D-Blue’s case needs to be resilient. The case is the largest of all Rolex dive watches, measuring at 17.7mm thick and 44mm wide.

We love the Rolex Deepsea D-Blue Dial – it embodies the classic Sea-Dweller also bearing a fitting resemblance to Cameron’s journey.
