Should You Get an Engraving on Your Jewellery?

two rings engravedTo engrave or not to engrave? That is the question. Many buyers of jewellery (particularly newlyweds) ponder this as they consider the cost of their item.

Well, there are many, many reasons for getting an engraving is a good idea. However, at Cuttings, we believe any engraving is a careful consideration and should not be taken lightly. Is it worth engraving the name of your loved one on the inside of your ring or is it better to leave it plain?

Pros

Makes Jewellery Extra Special

The most obvious reason to get an engraving is not only to make that piece of jewellery officially yours, but to make it much more special. Sure, a lovely gold necklace you gift to someone is already special but getting your own personal message on it makes it even more so.

You can even use engravings as a timestamp. The wearer will always remember the date they perhaps got the piece of jewellery or any other special occasion, providing fond memories to them simply by looking at the item in question.

Strengthens Your Bond

The personal nature of an engraving could be solid proof of a bond between two people, hence strengthening the uniqueness and value of the jewellery. A name may be enough but plenty of people like to put a personal message on the inside of a ring or pendant.

It is like having a sweet nothing permanently on your person. Even when that special person is absent, the piece of jewellery will always remind you of them.

The best part? You can get your jewellery engraved at any time. Your wedding may have taken place last week or ten years ago and it would not matter.

Cons

Different Metals

Depending on what metal your jewellery is made from, an engraving can weaken it. So before you make an engraving, make sure it is on the right metal.

Lower Value

While getting an engraving, it’s also important to consider that, in addition to an extra cost, there will also be a risk of lowering the value of said item. So, if somewhere down the line you want to sell your jewellery, you’ll get money knocked off if your item is addressed to a specific person.

Things to Consider

Now you have plenty of reasons why you should get your jewellery engraved, here are some factors to consider.

What You Want It to Say

Of course, due to the semi-permanence of an engraving, you want your message to be precise but also full of meaning. A commonly used pet-name for your loved one or a simple “Love Always” are excellent examples of this.

The Length of Your Message

The size of the message is also an important factor. Not only is the space for an engraving somewhat limited, you must also think about legibility and the clarity of every word. The shorter the better.

The Font

Generally, it’s better to read a block style font than a script-based one, but of course it’s entirely your choice. Your options are somewhat limited, however, so choose wisely!

Can I Get It Removed?

The one factor that stops many people getting their jewellery engraved is either the price or the fact it is like a tattoo in that it is difficult to remove. While pricing may be a factor, removal is totally possible and much easier than getting rid of an embarrassing tattoo by a long shot.

Many jewellers can simply polish off the engraving if you so wish. It is regretful to say but relationships do break down, so it is prudent to have measurements in place, so you’re not plagued with bad memories.
