What is antique jewellery?

When we hear the term ‘antique’, we all understand that the item is old. However, when it comes to jewellery, there can be some confusion when pieces can be listed as ‘vintage’ too. So what is the difference between antique jewellery and vintage jewellery? Keep on reading to find out...

What is antique jewellery? Antique broach in its original box

Antique jewellery describes a piece that was made over 100 years ago. Our antique jewellery collection, for example, has pieces from the Edwardian and Victorian era, dating back before the 1920s.

Due to the age of antique jewellery, they can be very high in value. One of the most expensive antique jewellery items in the world is called ‘The Hope Diamond’ which is worth a hefty $250 million!

Just like buying a car, purchasing a brand new model will decrease in value as soon as you drive off the dealership forecourt. However, antique or vintage cars can be very pricey. This is all due to the fact that each piece is unique and cannot be duplicated with modern production methods - the same applies to antique jewellery. For example, modern jewellery is often drastically different to pieces you would find in the Georgian era. You can take a look at the differences between both modern and antique jewellery on our website here.

Not only that, due to its age, people buying antique jewellery can feel a sentimental value with these pieces. Their rarity and history behind them can make antique jewellery pieces very sought after.

Antique or vintage jewellery

So now we know how we class jewellery as ‘antique’, what does vintage mean?

Jewellery shops may list pieces as ‘vintage’ which means they are between 50 and 100 years old. However, this term can also be used on jewellery items from a distinct era that doesn’t fall within this time period. For example, some pieces from the ’80s may be referred to as vintage due to its mass appeal in recent styles.

Not only that, modern jewellery can also be described as ‘vintage’ due to their look. This can complicate things further as this style is popular in modern-day fashion.

However, when visiting a second-hand jewellery shop like Cuttings, these terms will reflect its actual age.
