What is the difference between a gem and a jewel?

The short answer is that gems and jewels are the same type of item, but they are at different processing stages. As some are not aware of this definition, several myths surround the two items’ differences.

Although some people use the terms interchangeably, a gem, more formally known as a gemstone, is an unpolished precious or semiprecious stone. A jewel, on the other hand, is a refined gemstone that is often worn in jewellery or as a wearable precious item; because of this, gemstones and jewels are essentially the same item.

The qualities a stone needs to have to be considered a gemstone are rarity, beauty, and durability. Also, they should be from naturally-occurring minerals. Some well-known gemstones include diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds.

Once the gemstones are processed into jewels, they are evaluated for post-processing characteristics and natural appearance, such as the quality of cut, carat (weight), or visible colour and clarity. The higher the level of these characteristics, the more expensive the jewel will be therefore, unprocessed gemstones will come at a lower price.

Common myths

One may wonder whether diamonds and gemstones are different - the short answer is no. Diamonds can be processed to become the well-known, elegant jewel many people are aware of, but before it is cut, it is considered a gemstone because it follows the characteristics of being rare and a naturally-derived mineral.

One may also believe that diamonds are sourced from a specified location while gemstones are not, which is what makes them more precious. This is also not the case as specific unprocessed gemstones, such as rubies and emeralds, have a known source. The reason why processed diamonds are worth more is because they have been processed. Also, diamonds can still be low-quality and therefore cheaper if they have a common colour or are not pure. However, people often consider gemstones to be precious minerals.  Also, they may be divided into these categories for accessibility when one is making a purchase from a shop. Due to this, one should still be aware of this errant terminology.

Finally, some people even consider processed gold and platinum metals to be jewels because they are processed and considered high value. However, as these items are not minerals, they are properly known as precious metals. Common myths such as diamonds being more precious than other gems (or even that they are not gems at all) have circulated. Fortunately, simply recognising that a gem is an unprocessed stone and a jewel is a refined gemstone clears away much of the confusion.  Why not take a look at our range of beautiful jewellery and the wide range of stone types we have available.
