What is 'Summer Jewellery'?

Jewellery, like clothes, can be seasonal. In recent years, however, ‘summer’ jewellery has become quite a trend, almost as essential as taking sunscreen on holiday. But what, exactly, is summer jewellery and how does it differ from ‘normal’ jewellery? Does it even matter? 

Today, we take a look at what defines summer jewellery and the key characteristics to look out for. 

Brightly Coloured

Unlike, say, your traditional wedding ring, summer jewellery tends to be made from brightly coloured materials. For instance, you’re far more likely to see a pendant with an elaborate multi-colorued pattern on it than a necklace that’s just made from diamonds around summer time. 

Not only does this reflect the more ‘lively’ atmosphere summer tends to bring, it’s also because summer jewellery is made from lighter materials. Some may have gemstones, but they’re more likely to be made from less conventional materials such as seashells.

This isn’t a steadfast rule, however. As long as your jewellery has a vibrant hue then it can be considered summer jewellery. 

Nature-Inspired

While nature does play a huge role in inspiring jewellery designs all year round, it is much more noticeable in summer. Remember what we said about seashells? You’ll see a lot more of that hanging from bracelets and earrings around summertime. 

But that isn’t all! You might see some animal designs in their too, from sea turtles to starfish. Basically, anything to do with nature that makes you think of plenty of sunshine and lounging on the beach can make the perfect piece of jewellery for summer. 

Size

While this isn’t exactly a “summer” thing, you do see hoop earrings in sunshine more often than you do in winter, probably because you have less scarves and hats crowding your face to make it work. 

That isn’t the only thing, though. A lot of summer jewellery is generally quite chunky, i.e.: more noticeable because people finally have a chance to show it off.
