When you should remove your jewellery

You may ask why, if you bathe regularly with your jewellery on, is there a reason to remove it? Why not just keep your favourite pair of studs in all week? It’s important that you’re taking the time to remove all of your jewellery, ideally every day. In this blog post, we’ll discuss why this is important and when you should be removing your jewellery.

Why you should remove jewellery

If you’re under the impression that, because you’re bathing and washing your hands throughout the day, your jewellery also gets cleaned then you’ve been misinformed. Although many jewellery sellers will indeed recommend cleaning your jewellery with warm, soapy water, a shower won’t give it the cleaning it needs.

During the day when you wear your jewellery, it collects everything on it, from your perfume to dead skin cells. This can collect in your jewellery, ultimately damaging it over a period of time. The longer that you wear your jewellery with germs collecting on it and without taking the time to really wash it, the worse it’ll get.

Take the time to clean your jewellery

The truth is that your jewellery isn't getting the cleaning that it needs from a quick morning shower. It’s collecting germs throughout the day and to really get all the nooks and crannies, you have to take your jewellery off and devote some time to cleaning it.

When you should remove jewellery

Although you should be removing your jewellery daily, there are times when you’ll want to remove it to avoid the risk of it getting lost. Unfortunately, too many pieces of jewellery have been lost to devastated owners. Here are a few times when you may want to remove your jewellery.

Before a beach day

If you’re planning on heading to the beach and enjoying the water, you may want to reconsider wearing your jewellery in. Valuable pieces of jewellery have been lost at the bottom of the ocean and never recovered, quickly ruining a fun day in the sun. Although it may be more likely that you’ll spot your jewellery at the bottom of a pool, the chlorine will quickly eat away at metals. Always remove your jewellery before any swimming!

Taking care of children

For many small children, shiny jewellery is an enticing offer to grab. If you have a small child in the house you may want to opt to exchange your dangling earrings and delicate chains for sturdier pieces of jewellery.

The gym

Although the gym may not be the biggest culprit of damaging jewellery, it can certainly play a part in it. Your jewellery could bang against heavy machine handles and you can damage them. You may also want to think about the sweat on your jewellery and the fact that, with your circulation changing while you work out, your rings may become more uncomfortable.

Always remember to take your jewellery off when needed, you don’t want to damage or lose your jewellery as you may not get it back! Take your jewellery off and put it in a safe place when doing any activities listed above, as jewellery can be precious and its value could be sentimental.
