A History of: The Diamond

diamond.jpgDiamonds are one of the most sought-after natural gemstones available, and for good reason. Not only are they extremely valuable, but they are also breathtakingly beautiful and have quickly grown to symbolise love.

Diamonds date back as far as the 4th Century B.C. It is strongly believed that diamonds were first discovered by man inIndia, where at first they were only traded. This was until Alexander the Great brought them toEurope around 327 B.C, where the world’s richest quickly fell in love with the gems beauty.

It was around this time that humans began refining diamonds. The journey of a diamond starts in the deepest layers of the rock where it is forcefully ejected from its cradle, whether this is by nature or man-power. Then, they go through gentler processes including cutting and polishing to make them look like the diamonds we know and love today.

As diamonds were gaining a lot of popularity throughoutEurope, newer designs and cuts began to emerge. In 1375, one of the first diamond designs was created; The Point Cut. Diamonds before the point cut were merely naturally well-shaped gems, whereas those that were rough and jagged were not considered worthy.

The sourcing place of diamonds has changed throughout the years. Though it was first discovered by man in India, they were also discovered in South Americaaround the 18th Century. Diamonds are mined all over the world today, including Africa, the U.S andCanada and other recently discovered places.

The huge demand and increasing value of diamonds has meant miners have shifted from surface to underground in order to fish out the largest, most valuable and rarest forms of diamond. In fact, the diamond remains one of the most valuable gems available and is continuously used for stunning jewellery pieces, engagement rings and industrial purposes.
