5 of the most frequently asked questions about diamond jewellery

Diamonds are a very special, luxury rock to own, and thus those who are looking to invest in a diamond rightly have many questions to ask. If you are thinking of purchasing a diamond but are unsure on where to start, we’ve asked our diamond experts to put together 5 of the most frequently asked questions they get, to help you.

Is size or quality more important?

A diamond’s value is determined by both size and quality. Therefore a small, high-quality diamond can cost the same as a big lower-quality diamond.

Most people cannot afford a huge, flawless diamond and in fact, these diamonds are only really for the super rich. The good news, though, is that most diamond quality differences are so subtle that only a diamond expert can see them – and therefore a mid-to-high quality diamond will look just as beautiful.

How to tell if a diamond is real?

The best way to tell if a diamond is real is by consulting an expert gemologist with professional tools, or by requesting the diamond certificate. Our advice is to make sure that whoever you consult has the correct and relevant qualifications.

Do all diamonds sparkle?

This sounds like a silly question but is actually a very frequently asked one! A lot of people’s perceptions of diamonds are that they sparkle a lot, but in fact not all diamonds reflect the light in the same way. How much light is reflected, and therefore how much the diamond sparkles, is largely down to the shape of the diamond.

Round cuts sparkle the most, with Princess, marquise, oval, pear and heart cuts the second-most sparkly shapes. Emerald, cushion and baguette cuts give off long flashes of light, rather than sparkle.

What are the different diamond types of diamond rings?

Diamond rings are available in a wide range of styles and settings. That wide range is based on the shape and cut of a diamond, the setting, and metal of the ring. You can read more about the different types of diamond rings in our other blog here.

What are the 4 C’s and which C is the most important?

The 4 C's of diamonds: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. Each of these characteristics defines the quality, size and sparkle of the diamond. They are the characteristics that affect the diamond's visual appearance, light performance, and value.

Cut is the faceting, angles and proportions that are the pure light sparkle of the diamond.

Colour is the whiteness of the diamond- the less the better.

Clarity is the size and position of microscopic imperfections in the diamond.

Carat is a reflection of the weight and size of the diamond.
