Guide to buying an engagement ring

Firstly, if you’re looking at this article then you must be ready to pop the question so a big congratulations!

Buying an engagement ring is one of the biggest moments in a person’s life and a journey that is both very special and a little daunting. There are so many different things to take into consideration when it comes to choosing the perfect ring. That’s why we’ve put together a guide to help make some of this process a little easier.

Size

If you’ve never bought your partner a ring before, knowing her ring size may be a bit tricky. There are lots of ways you can find out, however, without her knowing:

  • Ask a friend or family member
  • Take a ring that she has worn before and you know fits, and bring it to a jewellers so they can tell you
  • If you’re feeling brave, subtly ask her!

Getting the correct size engagement ring is really important as you don’t want to ruin the moment by getting a ring that is too small!

Cut

Now you know the size, the next hurdle is deciding what cut to go for. You may have already discussed this with your partner, or heard her mentioning this, but if not, here’s a breakdown of the different cuts.

  • Round
  • Brilliantly round
  • Princess
  • Square
  • Emerald
  • Oval
  • Pear
  • Baguette

Diamond or gemstone?

While most engagement rings you see are traditionally diamond, there are actually many different gemstones you can choose from!

From the likes of the Duchess of Cambridge, to iconic celebrities, Sapphire, Emerald and other gemstone rings are very popular.
