How to Choose the Perfect Christmas Gift

christmas gift.jpgChristmas is creeping closer, which means finding the perfect gifts for our friends and loved ones. It’s a dangerous realm, gift giving – should they be practical, or extravagant? How much is too much? If you are worried about choosing the right gifts this Christmas, ask yourself these questions and you will be on your way to the perfect present.

Who is the recipient?

With shops offering multi-buy deals and discounts throughout the festive season, it can be tempting to bulk buy gifts and assign them to recipients later. The busy shopping centre can result in panic buying; however, if you make a list of ideas for each of your family and friends before you start shopping, you will be better prepared when faced with the overwhelming choice in the shops.

 Is there a set budget?

Another way to narrow down your gift options is to stick to budgets. If the office Secret Santa has a £10 limit, try your best to stay within that budget – you don’t want to make the rest of the office feel stingy with your flashy gift. On the other hand, if you are shopping for a picky mother-in-law it might be best to forget the budget altogether!

What have they asked for?

A guaranteed way to find the perfect gift is by simply finding out what your friends and family would like. If you don’t want to ask, there are plenty of subtle ways to glean their Christmas wishes. For example, you could ask one of their friends, or invite them Christmas shopping with you and keep an eye on what they are browsing.

Do they like receiving gifts?

We all have those friends that seem to have everything, filling you with fear every time Christmas comes around again. There are also those people who will say they don’t want anything. If you are buying for a difficult person, instead of buying a physical item, why not give them an experience instead, such as a spa or track day? You could also give a gift to a charity in your recipient’s name.

What’s significant about this Christmas?

Is this your first year as a married couple? Or your first Christmas in your own home? Think about the significance of this Christmas, and buy a gift accordingly. If the festive season is particularly important this year, perhaps with a new arrival in the family, you may want to mark the occasion with a special piece of jewellery or watch

What would you like to say?

When it comes to the perfect present, the thought really does count. For close friends and family members, try to think of what you would like to say through your gift, rather than worry about what you are spending or how many gifts you buy. Perhaps you want to thank your partner for working so hard this year: this could be communicated with a pre-arranged weekend away. Put that extra ounce of thought into your gift, and your loved ones will really thank you for it.
