How To Clean Your Luxury Watch

Owning a luxury watch is a privilege. Sometimes these are investments; at others, they represent years of hard work and the desired reward. Sometimes a luxury watch is a priceless heirloom handed down from generation to generation. In any case, a luxury watch should be cleaned regularly and with close attention.

When properly maintained and cared for, these classic timepieces can be passed down and adored by descendants and continue to increase in value. But what do owners of luxury watches need to know when cleaning them?

First, getting a luxury watch professionally cleaned and serviced from time to time is crucial. These services have the tools and know-how to get into minuscule crevices. However, there are things you can do between these services to prolong the life of your luxury watch.

Before You Start Cleaning

Before cleaning your luxury watch, ensure it is a waterproof piece. While this might seem obvious, many older timepieces are not technically waterproof. Your watch’s water resistance and level of waterproofing can be lower than you think. Think of it this way; if you wouldn’t wear it in the shower, it will likely not survive being fully submerged in water during cleaning.

Tools & Material to Use

Soft and delicate cleaning tools are the way to go. Ordinary cotton buds, a small chamois or microfiber cloth, and a soft-bristled toothbrush are ideal. Then, create a solution of warm water with a small amount of dish soap. Do not use any abrasive cloths, bristled tools or harsh chemicals in your cleaning solution. Not only could these damage the metals and appearance of your watch, but they may also be harmful to you.

Cleaning Process

Moisten the cotton buds and cloth to clean the watch but avoid fully submerging the watch in the solution. Remember to remove the watch’s straps to clean also. Dirt, grime, and sweat buildup over time and can cause damage. Watchmakers also indicate that bands stretch over time, which is exacerbated by poorly maintained straps. Metallic straps can be fully submerged in water, but leather ones should only be cleaned with damp cloths. While air drying the watch is best, a hair dryer on a cool setting can also be used for metallic straps if you need the watch soon.

When Should I Clean My Luxury Watch?

The regularity of your watch’s cleaning depends on how much you wear it. Ideally, a luxury watch should be worn only on special occasions. Still, if it is something you like to wear out more often, then a monthly clean is recommended. If the watch is regularly worn, consider regularly scheduling maintenance with a professional service, like Cuttings.
