How to keep your diamond jewellery sparkling

Engagement rings are a tradition that dates back to the Egyption times. It is thought that the Egyptians placed the ring, a symbol of eternity, on the bride’s left-hand ring finger because this is where the vena amoris (‘vein of love’) sits.

While you may not be used to wearing an engagement ring initially, or a ring of such significance, you will soon get used to the feeling of having it on your finger. However, it is important to not become complacent and to ensure that you clean it regularly both at home, and with a professional jeweller.

Tips for cleaning your diamond jewellery at home.

Diamonds are natural magnets for grease, so they’re not easy to keep clean. When a diamond is handled, the oils from your fingers adhere to the diamond’s surface and affect its brilliance and fire.

Diamond is the hardest natural substance on Earth. It can cut any kind of rock or metal, but only another diamond can cut a diamond.

The simplest way to keep your diamond jewellery or engagement ring looking beautiful, is to soak the jewellery in a gentle degreasing solution. To create this solution, all you need to do is mix water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Once you’ve done this, use a clean toothbrush to gently brush the diamond, removing all the dirt. Doing this once or twice a week is advisable.

Other steps you can take to avoid damage to your diamonds

There are also measures you can take to avoid damaging the jewellery further. Avoiding these substances will help you keep your jewellery sparkling:
Harsh chemicals
Abrasives
Lotions and creams
Perfumes

It is also advisable that you take your jewellery off when partaking in washing up, physical activities such as sports and swimming and when around harsh chemicals.

It is also important that you take your jewellery to a professional jeweller every 2 years for a service. Here the jeweller will check that no stones are becoming loose, or that there isn’t any lasting damage, and will fix any issues they do find.
