How to keep your Jewellery in Perfect Condition

If you own any stunning jewellery pieces, you’ve probably noticed that over time they may look a little tarnished and less sparkly. Luckily, you don’t need to get the pieces professionally cleaned and simply knowing the best ways to keep your jewellery will keep it in pristine, perfect condition.

Storing your jewellery in a clean and dry place, like a jewellery box or case that is fabric lined, is ideal. If you don’t own these, you can keep jewellery in an ordinary cardboard box as long as each jewellery piece is wrapped individually in soft paper. It’s not uncommon to be given a pouch or case designed with the right finish when you purchase a piece of jewellery. These are the best place to store your jewellery as they have been designed with the specific piece in mind.

It’s good practice to keep your jewellery box organised. Jewellery pieces that have been jumbled together risk getting tangled or scratched by another piece. Jewellery boxes with multiple small compartments will allow pieces to be separate from one another, meaning it will be difficult for them to ruin.

There are special chemical cloths available to buy for cleaning jewellery pieces that may have tarnished slightly. You can purchase these from most supermarkets or from the jeweller themselves. These are perfect for wiping off dirt and adding sparkle back into gold or silver jewellery. If you can’t get your hands on these, using a simple damp cloth or a soft toothbrush with lukewarm water and soap will do. Softly rub the jewellery pieces and they’ll be back in great condition. Make sure to dry all jewellery with a very soft cloth to avoid any scratches and leave to dry before wearing.

Take care if your jewellery features semi-precious stones like emeralds, pearls and opals. These gemstones are not as hard as diamonds or precious metals like gold and silver. Asking your jeweller for advice on the best way to clean precious stones is the best option. Wear your jewellery with care and always remember to take it off whilst cleaning, swimming or partaking in physical activity.

Diamonds are one of the hardest known materials. Other diamonds are the biggest danger for scratches and cuts to the stone of your jewellery. You can follow the same steps for storing and cleaning diamond jewellery as with other precious stones, meaning you can clean all your pieces together- as long as they are not in close contact and able to scratch the surface of other stones or metals.
