The Psychology of Jewellery

Have you ever wondered why us humans love wearing jewellery? Well, it goes back a long time into our history.

Humans started wearing jewellery when people were highly superstitious, in the form of amulets or charms that would protect them from evil spirits. In other cultures jewellery is used for communication between male and females. For example Zulu people in South Africa use colourful beadwork to reveal a woman’s marital status, whereas in Western Culture this is in the form of wearing a ring on the 4th finger on the left hand.

Jewellery holds the power to communicate the feelings and beliefs of the person wearing it. It can be highly sentimental and personal for people when pieces are passed down through family generations. Jewellery is not only a financial investment, but an emotional one too. Research shows there is a definite increase in self- confidence when a person wears jewellery that means something to them. Adding a special touch to an outfit, jewellery is an accessory that is thought to enhance one’s beauty and gains the admiration of others.

As well as portraying wealth and social status at times, wearing jewellery is a way of expressing our character.

Someone who we might see wearing big, bold, colourful jewellery comes across as having an extraverted personality. Meaning, this person is outgoing, confident, assertive and energetic. Sometimes reflected in their eye- catching appearance.

A person wearing more understated, simple designs in classic metals might be classed as having an introverted personality. People like this tend to be internally introspective of themselves rather than what’s going on around them, while having a classic style and not usually being the centre of attention.

The beauty of this is, we can choose what we want to portray to the world about ourselves each day just from choosing the clothes and jewellery we might wear.

As the industry develops, brands are using a more personalised shopping experience when it comes to jewellery, ensuring the customer feels comfortable making their investment. Curating such a personal experience focusing on the customer’s personal style and personality makes for a meaningful investment.
