There are some wonderful jewellery designers around the world who are pushing the boundaries of design and creativity, revolutionising understands of what jewellery can be. We decided to explore their work in this post.

Anabela Chan (London & Paris)

Chan draws inspiration from the natural world and her ventures to exotic lands. Her experiences and memories from her travels are showcased through her understanding of precision and composition.

Unlike most jewellers, Chan’s focus is not on the preciousness of the stone but rather the ‘incredible craftsmanship of our human hands, in unison with the wonders of our creative minds.’ We’re impressed with how much attention she gives the process of creating her handmade, ethically produced pieces. Chan truly is an artist and visionary.

We adore her work for the whimsy and intricacy it demonstrates. She exhibits a strong, confident use of technique and materials which, when paired with the artistry of her design, create an unending visual feast. A prime example of this is her collection, ‘Jardin Du Paradis’. Her creations in this collection are not only shaped and formed beautifully, the colours are well chosen and paired, which reinforce that sense of harmony. All in all, Jardin Du Paradis it’s a testament to the incredible standards Anabela Chan upholds.

Hemmerle (Germany)

Today, Hemmerle is run by Stefan and Sylveli Hermmerle, their son Christian, and his wife Yasmin. Hemmerle has always been a family business, each generation taking the reins. Through the course of time, Hemmerle has proven to be innovative and is able to reinvent their style and aesthetics. For years, their focus was on antiquities, and now they delve in the contemporary.

We admire so much the way Hemmerle is able to extract the nuances and textures of the objects they recreate. This brand does not shy away from experimenting with materials and processes, as we can see in their most recent collection, AL. It toys with aluminium and how the material can be manipulated. We’re astounded by the way they seem to so easily replicate the natural world. The team at Hemmerle truly are alchemists and their willingness to branch into new territory is why they have stood steadfast since 1893.

Christiaan Van Der Klaauw (Netherlands)

Christiaan Van Der Klaauw is renowned for integrating astronomy into their watch design. That has been their primary interest since the company was founded in 1974 and they are, to this day, the only designer who are solely devoted to this endeavour. In 2009, with Dutch designer Daniël Reintjes as successor and flagship of the company, Christian Van Der Klaauw took on a new direction, which eventually led to a collaboration with Van Cleef & Arpels in 2014. Together, they created their most complicated watch ever; a planetary watch with self-winding mechanical movement containing 396 separate components. It even had miniature representations of six planets moving around the sun. It was a masterful feat that really triumphed. Daring to attempt a project like this is precisely the revolutionary thinking we admire in Christiaan Van Der Klaauw.

These designers are nothing short of revolutionary pioneers, and the knowledge of their craft is worthy of so much praise.
