Save Money in 2017 With These New Years’ Resolutions

Most New Years’ Resolutions are notoriously short-lived. We start off with high hopes to quit the junk food, get fit and get rich, but all it takes is one chocolate bar or missed gym session before we give up completely.

How about making some resolutions that will actually stick? If you want to save money in 2017, these 5 resolutions will help you reach your target.

Set a savings goal

Start the year on the right foot by setting a tangible goal for your savings. Once you have this goal in sight, your other resolutions will be easier to carry out and keep because you have more of a reason for doing so. When setting a goal, it should be ambitious but not impossible. First, work out what you are saving for, and how much you will need. Could this be achieved in a year? Set a realistic timeframe for your goal – this will help you work out how much you need to save each month.

Stick to a budget

Planning a budget around your monthly income and expenditures is a tried and tested way to save money. Once you’ve planned a budget, do all you can to stick to it by removing temptations to spend. If you’re guilty of making impulse purchases with a debit card, start using cash instead and only withdraw what you are prepared to spend that week.

Switch energy providers

We often stick with the same gas and electricity providers because, let’s face it, no-one likes dealing with extra phone calls or paperwork. However, if you dedicate a few minutes to comparing energy prices online, you will probably find a cheaper tariff by switching providers. Follow this Which? Guide to find out how to save.

Take a packed lunch to work

According to VoucherCloud.com, we could save an average of £1,300 a year by taking a packed lunch instead of buying it out. If you don’t think you have time to prepare lunch in the morning, why not make time the night before? Whether it’s a healthy soup, a salad, or just a quick sandwich, you’ll be saving a considerable sum by making the effort.

Cancel a subscription

Take a look what you’ve been paying for in 2016 and choose at least one subscription to cancel. Could you survive without those extra television channels? How about going for a run instead of running on the treadmill at the gym? Once you have cancelled your chosen subscriptions, you could set up a monthly direct debit into a savings account instead.

We hope you feel inspired to save more money in 2017, and wish you all the best with your resolutions!
