Should I Buy New or Antique Jewellery?

Are you searching for a wedding ring? Or perhaps you’re looking for the perfect gift for a special someone?

Finding the right piece of jewellery takes time and consideration. One of the most important things to decide is whether to buy a sparkling new piece of jewellery or a charming antique – both have their benefits along with some drawbacks, so it really depends on what you’re looking for.

To help you with your decision, we’ve listed the advantages and disadvantages of both new and antique jewellery:

Advantages of Buying New Jewellery

  • You are the first owner. It’s a wonderful feeling, knowing that you are the first person to wear a brand new piece of jewellery. Perhaps you’ll be the first of many wearers if you pass the jewellery down to the next generations.
  • You can choose an ethical designer. Many new jewellery designers are dedicated to using ethical practices when creating jewellery. If you care about how the jewellery is made, buying new will mean you can be more selective.

  • Countless styles to choose from. Whether you prefer a vintage style or you desire something trendy and modern, you are almost guaranteed to find your ideal jewellery design if you buy new.
  • Use your own design. Can’t find the perfect piece of jewellery? Your own design could be made into a brand new piece of jewellery with the help of a jewellery design service.

Disadvantages of New Jewellery

  • High street retailers mark-up jewellery. Unfortunately, buying a new piece of jewellery from a high street retailer is not usually good value for money because of the high mark-ups and VAT.
  • New jewellery will instantly lose value. Buying new jewellery is like buying a new car – the value is likely to decrease as soon as you have bought it.

Advantages of Buying Antique Jewellery

  • A wise investment. Antique jewellery is more likely to retain or increase its value over the years, making it a better choice if you are looking for a good investment.
  • More for your money. Antiques offer more value for money than new jewellery, as they do not have the high mark-up.
  • Historic charm. Owning a piece of antique jewellery is like owning a piece of history. It’s survived World Wars and had many wearers before ending up in your jewellery box.
  • Timeless style. Antique jewellery will not go out of fashion in the same way as a new piece of jewellery – it’s timeless.

What Are the Disadvantages of Antique Jewellery?

  • Antique jewellery requires care and attention. All jewellery, whether new or antique, needs to be looked after, but more care needs to be taken with older pieces as they can become quite fragile.
  • Not for everyday wear. Antique jewellery is more likely to get damaged if worn all the time. A jeweller will be able to give you advice on the condition of a piece and whether it is suitable for everyday wear.
