What Men’s Watch Style is Right for Me?

Choosing a watch has to be a personal decision – after all, you will be the one wearing it. With so many styles, manufacturers and models to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you?

The first decision you need to make is one of style. Different types of watches serve different purposes, so it’s important to choose the style that is going to fit with you.

Why do you want a watch?

Everyone has their own reason for choosing to purchase a proper watch, whether it’s simply because they feel they deserve a good timepiece, or they want to invest in something that will keep its value. What’s your reason? Perhaps you love history and want to find a watch with a fascinating past. Maybe you already have a watch for every day and you’re looking for something to wear on special occasions. The answer you give will affect which style is right for you.

What do you value most in a watch?

The next step to establishing the right style is finding out what your perfect watch would look like. Do you value a big brand, or would you prefer a lesser known manufacturer? Is the design important to you? Does it need to be water resistant? Making a list of preferences will help you to decide on the right style.

Choosing a Watch Style

We could go on and on about the number of watch styles around today, but in general, they all fit into two main categories – dress watches and sports watches.

Dress Watches

As their name suggests, dress watches look best with a suit in formal situations, but they also wouldn’t look out of place worn with casual dress. From the conservative, no-nonsense styles to the more luxurious and complicated designs, dress watches are characterised by their slim nature; this is so that they can slip under a suit jacket.

If minimalism is on your list of preferences, a dress watch is ideal. This style is perfect if you spend your working week in a suit; similarly, if you’re looking for something to bring out for formal occasions. The Rolex Day-Date is a brilliant example of a classic, chic dress watch that can be customised to your requirements. The vintage Day-Date pictured here has been updated with a tan leather strap, creating a versatile watch for a range of occasions.

Sports Watches

This category covers a wider variety of watch styles, including dive watches and aviation watches. It’s also considered to be a more popular style amongst modern men, perhaps because of the choices available. Their robust design and added protection set them apart from dress watches – many sports models will have added protection in the form of thicker cases or water-proofing technology. Although many sports watches have been designed for an active lifestyle, they wouldn’t look out of place in a formal situation.

Are you looking for a watch for everyday life, that will survive a day out with the kids but will look the part in a business meeting? Perhaps you are more suited to a sports watch. If your list of preferences includes “impressive features”, imagine owning a watch that can survive 4,000 feet underwater? The Rolex Sea-Dweller, pictured here in stainless steel with a black bezel, would be an ideal choice.
